Papua New Guinea Human Rights Film Festival

Papua New Guinea Human Rights Film Festival
Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby
Description
The Papua New Guinea Human Rights Film Festival (PNG HRFF) promotes greater respect, protection and fulfillment of human rights for all and creates a forum for debate to empower the audience with the understanding that personal commitment can make a difference to end discrimination. The festival brings to life human rights stories. It challenges each individual to empathize with the most vulnerable and discriminated against in our societies, especially victims of human rights violations and supports justice for all people.
Films screened present different human rights themes and are followed by panel discussions with the audience. It is an opportunity to look at the current situation in Papua New Guinea and what can be done to further implement human rights in those key areas.
The first edition of the festival was organized in December 2010 over three days to mark International Human Rights Day on 10 December. Film is a particularly powerful medium in Papua New Guinea, a country of sounds and colours with a rich tradition of storytelling. The second edition of the PNG HRFF was held in December 2011 to coincide with International Human Rights Day. The 2011 edition lasted for five days and included more different human rights themes. In the future, PNG HRFF intends to become a travelling festival with editions held in different parts of the country.
