The Sauti Zetu Film Festival (SZFF) is an annual celebration of African cinema dedicated to heightening community awareness of gender equality and the protection of civic space. By empowering citizens to champion freedom of expression as a fundamental human right, the festival has evolved over the years into a vibrant hub for cinematic celebration and transformative community dialogue.
To date, SZFF has curated and screened more than 30 impactful African films, ranging from gripping feature narratives to international documentaries. These works specifically tackle the intersectional themes of gender justice, press freedom, and climate action, providing a rare platform for stories that are often marginalized in mainstream media.
Beyond the annual festival dates, our impact is sustained through year-round screenings in open community spaces, schools, and local theaters (Kibanda Umiza) across Tanzania. Facilitated by Media for Development and Advocacy (MEDEA) in partnership with local grassroots organizations, these open screenings turn public areas into safe harbors for debate, ensuring that the dialogue sparked on-screen leads to tangible advocacy in the streets.
